State of the Australian trades 2026

The trades intelligence briefing from TradieTech27. Four numbers that explain where Australian trade businesses are heading, and why.

The squeeze

Australian trades are caught in a pincer. There is a shortfall of 70,000 to 80,000 workers against national housing targets, so you cannot hire your way out. And FY2024–25 saw 3,490 construction insolvencies, a decade high, so the pressure is real and it is closing businesses. A sector worth more than $30 billion, running hot and thin at the same time.

The shift

Tradies are not Luddites anymore. The average trade business now runs 6.2 software platforms, up 20% year on year. But 21% are still on pen and paper for core jobs, and 40% name technician inefficiency as their number one problem. AI is arriving fast, with 34% of firms already using it in some form. The tools are here. The problem is they do not talk to each other.

The gap

There are 370,000+ sole traders at one end and a handful of enterprise giants at the other. In the middle sit roughly 40,000 mid-market firms, 5 to 199 staff, scaling past the tools and getting served by nobody. Software built for a solo sparky does not fit a 40-crew operation. Enterprise platforms are overkill and overpriced. This is the gap.

The response

The businesses that survive the squeeze will not be the ones with the best trade skills. They will be the ones running Management, Muscle and Money as one connected system instead of ten apps that do not speak. That is the whole game now: operational leverage, not more hours.

TradieTech27 is Australia's trade-tech expo for the mid-market contracting sector. Two days, three pillars, zero fluff. MCEC Melbourne, October 2027. Attendance is by application and complimentary.
